IMPORTER SECURITY FILING
In November of 2008, Customs announced a new program requiring the transmission of ten data elements for all ocean shipments. This transmission is known as the “Importer Security Filing” and is a separate transaction from the Customs Entry.
There is a 12 month phase in of the new procedure during which time Customs will show restraint in enforcement as long as the importer is making satisfactory progress in making the filings accurately and within allowed time limits. As infractions can result in a penalty in the amount of $5,000.00, it is imperative that all parties to the transaction are aware of the need to comply.
A copy of the data sheet we recommend utilizing can be found here. Because the address data elements are quite detailed, we recommend that exporters complete and return our address sheet with their first shipment.
Please call us with any questions you might have regarding this program.
